Centenary of the sinking of the Mayflower - Commemoration Event

The Combermere Heritage Society Inc. and the Barry's Bay Heritage Society are organising a special remembrance ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the steamer 'Mayflower' on Monday November 12 2012. The ceremony will be in two parts: the morning event will be held at the Barry's Bay wharf, and the afternoon event will be in Combermere. A full program is now available. Both Societies are recognising this auspicious event as the sinking of the Mayflower was a devastating tragedy for the communities when nine people perished on the night of November 12, 1912. It was the largest loss of live on an Ontario inland waterway, a record that lasted many years. Three of the twelve people on board survived. Many of the descendants of the Mayflower passengers from that fateful night have already been contacted and plan to attend.
